In "Star Trap," a BBC Radio dramatization of Simon Brett's Charles Paris Mystery, Charles finds himself in an unexpected and rather baffling situation: he's been cast in a West End musical. This is particularly surprising as Charles is known for drinking more than his singing or dancing.
The reason for his casting soon becomes clear. His long-suffering agent, Maurice, is one of the "angels" (backers) for the show, and he's concerned. A series of troubling "accidents" have been plaguing the production: the pianist has been shot in the hand, and another cast member took a suspicious tumble down the stairs. Maurice wants Charles to discreetly investigate and ensure their investment, and the star, Chris Watt, are safe.
As Charles integrates into the company, he discovers that Chris Watt, despite his immense talent, is a notorious prima donna who has made enemies of almost everyone involved with the musical. When the "accidents" continue, it becomes apparent that the targets are those who have crossed the volatile star. Charles must determine if Chris Watt is truly sabotaging his own show, or if there's a more devious hand at play, before the escalating incidents turn into outright murder. It's a classic Charles Paris scenario, mixing the chaotic world of theatre with a healthy dose of mystery, and usually a bit of personal melodrama involving his "semi-detached" wife, France
