"The Cinderella Killer" is a BBC Radio Drama in the "Charles Paris Mystery" series, based on the novel by Simon Brett and starring Bill Nighy as Charles Paris.
It's Christmas, and Charles Paris, ever the struggling actor, has landed a minor part in a pantomime production of "Cinderella" at the Empire Theatre in Eastbourne. While he's not thrilled with the role, it's work. His main task seems to be gently introducing the show's bewildered American star, Kenny Polizzi (a faded sitcom actor who's fled to England), to the bizarre and uniquely British traditions of pantomime.
However, the festive cheer quickly turns sour. Kenny Polizzi, it turns out, has a lot of baggage: a controlling agent, an obsessed stalker, and a soon-to-be ex-wife who's far from happy. When Charles stumbles upon Kenny's body under Eastbourne Pier, with a neat bullet hole in his forehead, the slapstick of pantomime makes way for a very real murder investigation.
As the police descend and the pantomime rehearsals plunge into chaos, Charles finds himself under suspicion. To clear his name, and perhaps just because he can't help himself, Charles embarks on his own investigation. Amidst the egos and eccentricities of the cast and crew, and with the body count surprisingly rising, Charles must piece together the clues to uncover who truly wanted the "Cinderella Killer" dead, and why. The line "they're behind you" takes on a much more sinister meaning as Charles navigates the tangled web of theatrical rivalries and personal vendettas.
