This is Calvary sung by A. D. Madeira and recorded in May of 1901. This rather primitive disc has an almost non-existent lead-in area which makes it difficult to get a lightweight stylus in the correct position. I had to record this one a bit differently than I've done with my Berliners up to this point. The styli on my Technics was just too light to be able to track the grooves of this slightly off-set, poorly maintained record. The tone arm bounced all over the place and when I added more weight, the stylus hit up against the cart.
So I moved everything over to my Garrard Type A turntable. I had to compromise speed control in order to gain a turntable with a tone arm that I could add weight to. This player spins at 78.5 rpm. Some say that these early Victor records should spin at 76 rpm. I don't have that capability. I haven't pitched this but according to my ears, this works out just fine.
As per usual it is running through a Behringer UFO202 into Audacity on my MacBook. I had to do a LOT of processing this audio in regards to click removal, amplification, and removal of background noise. It's hard to imagine from how noisy this recording is that any background noise was removed. But it was. Believe it or not this is WAY better.
I definitely prefer the recording of this as played on my Victor III, but this was transferred by special request. So here it is! Hope you're able to get something from it.
