Back when I was new to collecting old phonographs and 78 rpm records I frequented this beautiful antique mall in one of the smallest towns in all Vermont. It's where I got my first wind-up phonograph; a Victor Victrola VV-VI. On one particular visit I stumbled upon this little oak box sitting on a table in a side room. Thinking back, I wish I could remember what else was on that table and what I may have missed out on. But I digress...
The box had a little tag labeled "old records" so I opened it up to look inside. I'd never seen Berliners before, I had no idea what I was looking at. It was the mid 90s, the internet wasn't really a thing yet, there was no way for me to look up what I was looking at. The price was a little too steep for a college kid paying his way through school, but my father thought I should have them given my enthusiasm for music, antiques, and antique music, so he offered to buy them for me.
Over the years I've learned more, and more about them and the artists that recorded them. Many of these were not listed on Discogs so the pages there were created by me and some have been edited by other collectors and enthusiasts. I would love to hear from other folks out there who know about these and can shed some light on any aspects I may not have covered.
I have been recently trying to figure out a way to distinguish between those discs that Berliner had pressed by the Duranoid M'f'g Company and those pressed by the Burt company. I think I MAY have started to figure out how to tell the difference. Follow along and see if you think I may or may not be on the right track.
