Training For Strength Vs. Aesthetics (Which Goal Is Better?)

Ever since the popularity of powerlifting took off several years ago, it's become common to hear the idea that strength training is superior to hypertrophy training since it's a more "functional" goal and is less superficial.

However, when it comes to lifting for strength vs. aesthetics, the reality is that the two goals largely go hand in hand. Progressive overload is the underlying driver of muscle growth, and so in order to build muscle at a significant rate, continually gaining strength is a pre-set requirement.

Those who talk about training for "strength vs. aesthetics" are talking as if these two goals are mutually exclusive when in fact they aren't. The reality is that any natural lifter you see with decent muscle mass on their frame will already be in the top percentile across the population in terms of muscular strength, since they wouldn't have been able to gain muscle effectively without adding a significant amount of weight to their lifts over time.

In addition, unless you're an athlete or have a practical day to day need to be extremely strong at a particular movement pattern, lifting for maximum strength is purely a personal choice based on what type of training goals you find most motivating. Once your practical strength needs are met, the issue of powerlifting vs. bodybuilding or strength vs. aesthetics has no one "correct" answer.

What's the bottom line on training for aesthetics vs. strength?

Do whichever one you want. Just make sure you're training your entire body equally and hitting all the basic movement patterns (for the sake of overall physique balance and to prevent injuries) and that you're including some weekly cardio for overall health purposes.

Beyond that, you'll naturally gain enough strength to cover your practical day to day needs on the road to that muscular, "aesthetic" body you're after.
