Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is a popular hill station located in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, India. It is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district and is situated at an altitude of about 2,240 metres (7,350 ft) above sea level. Known for its cool climate and scenic setting, Ooty was established as a summer retreat by the British in the early 19th century. The town continues to serve as one of the most visited hill resorts in southern India, attracting both domestic and international tourists throughout the year.
The name Udhagamandalam is believed to have originated from the Toda word othakal-mund, meaning "house in the mountains." During the British colonial period, the anglicized name "Ootacamund" was commonly used, which eventually became shortened to "Ooty." The hill station gained importance when the British developed it as a summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency, owing to its salubrious weather and resemblance to temperate climates.
Ooty is surrounded by extensive tea plantations, eucalyptus groves, and dense forests, which contribute to its distinctive landscape. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, connects the town with Mettupalayam and is a major attraction due to its historic value and engineering significance. The railway passes through steep gradients, bridges, and tunnels, offering visitors panoramic views of the Nilgiris. Agriculture also plays a key role in the local economy, with potatoes, carrots, and a variety of hill vegetables grown extensively in the region.
Tourism forms the backbone of Ooty’s economy. Prominent attractions include the Government Botanical Garden, established in 1848, which houses rare plant species and an iconic fossilized tree trunk estimated to be 20 million years old. The Ooty Lake, created in 1824, is popular for boating activities. Other notable places include the Rose Garden, Doddabetta Peak—the highest point in the Nilgiris—and nearby viewpoints such as Kalhatti Falls and Avalanche. The town also hosts cultural events like the annual Flower Show, drawing visitors in large numbers.
Ooty’s population is diverse, with a blend of indigenous communities such as the Todas, Kotas, Badagas, and Kurumbas, along with settlers from other parts of India. The Toda people, in particular, are recognized for their unique culture, embroidered shawls, and distinctive barrel-vaulted houses. English, Tamil, and Badaga are widely spoken in the town. The influence of colonial architecture is visible in many churches, bungalows, and heritage buildings across Ooty, giving the hill station a blend of Indian and European character.
The town is well connected by road to Coimbatore, Mysuru, and Bengaluru, making it accessible for tourists. The nearest airport is in Coimbatore, approximately 88 kilometres away. Ooty enjoys a subtropical highland climate, with mild summers and chilly winters, making it a year-round destination. Due to its unique geography, cultural heritage, and prominence in tourism, Ooty holds a significant place among India’s most iconic hill stations.
Ooty is linked to nearby cities and towns through a network of mountain roads, which serve as the primary means of transport. The hill station is connected to Coimbatore (about 86 km) and Mettupalayam (about 50 km) via State Highway 15 (NH 181), a winding ghat road with steep curves and scenic viewpoints. This road passes through Coonoor and is the most commonly used route. Another important approach is the steep and narrow ghat road from Mettupalayam via Kothagiri, known for its 36 continuous hairpin bends.
Additional access routes include the Gudalur–Mysuru road, which connects Ooty to Karnataka through Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Manjur–Mulli road linking it with parts of Kerala. These roads not only provide vital connectivity but also make the journey to Ooty a notable experience due to the surrounding tea estates, forested slopes, and mountain scenery. The ghat sections, though challenging for drivers, are maintained regularly as they handle significant tourist and cargo traffic.
Public transport to Ooty is served by buses operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), as well as by private operators. Buses run frequently to Coimbatore, Mysuru, Bengaluru, Erode, and other regional hubs. Taxis and private vehicles are also widely used, especially by tourists. Despite the difficult terrain, the roads are accessible throughout the year, although heavy rains during the monsoon season may sometimes cause landslides and temporary disruptions.
