“Phobias” is a large-scale work for percussion ensemble composed by our professor, Kevin Bobo, during his Spring 2023 sabbatical. Unlike typical commissions, which often have constraints on duration, performers, or instrumentation, Bobo embraced complete artistic freedom for this piece, resulting in a truly unrestricted creative work.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, a “phobia” is defined as “an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation.” In this composition, Bobo explores seven distinct phobias—some of which he personally experiences, while others are outside his own realm of fear. The work employs over 60 different instruments, ranging from traditional percussion like xylophone, snare drum, and marimba, to more unconventional instruments such as tuned artillery shells, ocarina, and angklung.
Phobias was composed in the Spring of 2023 and premiered by the Indiana University Percussion Ensemble on October 22nd, 2023, in Bloomington, Indiana.
