🧬 About This Story
Vael Orin runs the only licensed repair berth on Drelka Station — a frontier dock at the edge of contested space — and she runs it alone. When Dex Harrow limps in with a wrecked cargo hauler and no leverage, he expects a quick fix from whatever passes for a mechanic out here. He gets Vael: precise, guarded, twice as competent as anyone who ever doubted her, and completely uninterested in being impressed. But the station's governing body is quietly moving to strip her operating contract and hand it to a Hegemony-backed firm. Then Vael's estranged kin, Fleet Commander Thess, arrives with an offer — come back to the vulpine fleet, where her skills will be valued, where she won't have to fight for the right to exist. And a pressure storm hits the station's docking ring, threatening every ship in the berth. What Vael does in the storm, and what Dex says afterward, forces her to answer the question she's been avoiding: what does it actually mean to belong somewhere?
