In a recent breakthrough, we have successfully reformulated the governing equations of the VPM into a scheme that is numerically stable, and developed a meshless subgrid-scale model of vortex stretching with backscatter control. This video shows our preliminary results as we move on to get things ready for publication.
This research is part of a larger effort to bring high-fidelity modeling into the multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of #eVTOL aircraft using vortex methods. PI: Prof. Andrew Ning.
The viscous Vortex Particle Method is a mesh-free #CFD method for the numerical solution of Navier-Stokes in its vorticity form. The VPM efficiently preserves vortical structures in a Lagrangian scheme, eliminates the complexities of mesh generation and numerical diffusion, is not restricted by the CFL condition, and is 100x to 1000x faster than mesh-based CFD (URANS/DES/LES).
