Hi I'm Doctor Andrea Libutti, and in today's video I will explain the 2nd Cornerstone of Autism Independence:

and as you might have guessed, this cornerstone is AUTISM THERAPY.

Now, there are many different types of autism therapies out there such as ABA, Floortime, RDI, Son Rise, and probably many others.

However, this video is not about choosing the RIGHT autism therapy, instead, what this video is about is...

CHOOSING THE RIGHT THERAPIST.

In a few moments I will tell you the story of an autism mom, just like me, that I recently met... and this story is going to be CRUCIAL to your understanding of how to choose an autism therapy.

So as you might have read before my son with autism did ABA around 12 years ago, he did it consistently for a couple years, but here's the thing:

I NEVER LIKED ABA, because I always felt it was DISRESPECTFUL towards my child.

I always felt it was FORCED and pushed, but it was the only technique that I knew about at the time.

Now...

As mentioned above, recently I just met this other mom, her 4 and a half year old is doing ABA, and we started getting into a discussion about this particular autism therapy;

I was explaining to her that I didn't think ABA is good, BUT... she was very protective of it!

And what I discovered when we REALLY talked about what was going on with the therapy sessions for her son, was that THE THERAPIST was employing tactics and techniques of interacting with her child that (to me) were VERY MUCH LIKE the Son-Rise program.

The Son-Rise program is this beautiful, respectful, accepting child-centred program, a program that, as I found out later, I absolutely adore because it just felt good, and we had GREAT progress with it;

This particular mom was telling me that ABA was great, and what I discovered, is that she happened to have a REALLY PHENOMENAL THERAPIST.

As you can see one of the lessons is that IT DOESN'T MATTER how we decide to CALL the autism therapy, as long as the professional that we chose is a certain kind of therapist.

So I have created for you a list of * * * 5 NON-NEGOTIABLE TRAITS * * * that your therapist must have, to work with your child.

The reason these 5 traits are really crucial, is because the RELATIONSHIP that the therapist builds with your child is one of the most significant elements of the process.
