Southwest Region Photo Documentation of Pictographs and Historic Writing at Palomas Cave Pictograph Site

Abstract:
The Forest Service and Apaches plan to gate Palomas Cave in which the SWR has worked to remove recent spray paint graffiti. The Apaches feel it's a sacred site, and for good reason: During the SWR restoration work, team members Val Hildreth and Mike Bilbo worked on photo documentation of probable Warm Springs Apache and possible prehistoric pictographs found at the Main and adjacent North Entrance. We may have also identified additional pictographs further in the cave. Previously someone or group, maybe cavers actually, attempted to remove historic writing on the main passage walls, thinking that to be graffiti. Most of those writings, while faint due to the removal impact, remain visible and we thus recorded those too. To better "see" what was on the walls, both known and suspected, we used a valuable, relatively new technology developed by rock art researchers known as D-Stretch.
