Abstract:
As part of the Wild Cave Project for Great Basin National Park and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Northup Lab did microbial surveys of 10 caves in the area. The mostly hypogean caves in the area house unique and breathtaking cave formations. Over a two-year period, samples were collected for DNA and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The SEM showed a wide variety of mineral features, and several samples had few signs of microbial life. The DNA analysis showed some surprising results. There were several samples rich in salt-loving bacteria. Many had a large number of unknown or newly identified organisms. Further studies of the samples will include more in-depth sequencing in hopes of gaining better understanding of microbial life in the Great Basin Caves.
