Mistakes to Avoid w/ Depression & Anxiety - Social Security Disability

Описание: Mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, bi-polar and schizophrenia can qualify you for disability benefits, but do not rely on these "labels" when you appear before a Social Security disability judge.


If you are struggling with a mental health condition, you live with symptoms and medication side effects every day. You may not remember what life was like without these issues.


But as I discuss in this video, you cannot assume that your Social Security disability judge knows what you mean when you testify that "I am severely depressed" or "I suffer from PTSD."


Mental health symptoms are very personal to the individual. Furthermore, psychiatrists and therapists may use different labels in their notes. Doctor "A" may diagnose you with major depression, while Therapist "B" may diagnose you with PTSD.


If you rely on labels like "depression" or "PTSD" your judge will not gain any understanding about the specific problems you are experiencing or how those problems impact your capacity for work.


So, instead of relying on labels, practice with your attorney describing with specifics exactly how your mental health problems affect your life. Do certain sounds or smells trigger a PTSD reaction? Do you experience crying spells and bouts of sadness for no reason at all several times a week. Do your medications make it impossible to focus or do they put you to sleep?


In the Social Security disability world, the more specific you can be when describing your symptoms the better.
