Archivist Dave Simpson takes us back to 1990 to look at the railways, tramway and monorail at Gateshead Garden Festival.
From NB : Mike - same source as the wagon plates? Maine?
From MD : No, Nigel. The Katie restoration scheme of the '80's.
From NB : That’s a pretty accurate description of my horn playing Dave - without notes…
From GFM : The staiths are STILL very impressive - even if people keep arson about with them :(
From GFM : It was YOU!
From JL : 37 million today based on Bank of England inflation £83,5910
From DGWR : were Romney approached for a steam locos. Also any reason for sending Rock & Irt
From SB : Do you know how the single line was worked?
From Ask Andy : Romney in 1990 hadlocos at Bure Valley, Samson, Black Prince
From JP : Surprised that Dr Who was being advertised as the last of the original series was in 1989, the year before the festival.
From GFM : Sylvester McCoy was at the show on at least one day :)
From Ask Andy : Big Doctor Who fan here!
From MP : The TV series had ended, but there was still a large following, and the series was continued in novel form
From GFM : Beamish's archive had photos of him doing his thing in costume
From Ask Andy : I notice vacuum as well as air brake pipe..
From GFM : http://collections.beamish.org.uk/
This is their public archive portal - obvs there's a lot more not on this system!
From CG : That was David wasn't it?
From Gala Rog : Does anyone know why vac brakes were used, as it was designed to use Ratty locos?
From MH : How long was the line?
From JL : the liverpools where vac braked
From RD : Question for the end...….was this a commercial venture for the Ratty? It must have been very disruptive and while there would be good publicity, it will have been costly. Was it considered worthwhile?
From Ask Andy : Did having two steam locos there leave Ratty short of motive power
From SD: Black Prince spend that summer at ratty covering for Irt
From SD : I still have my garden festival programme complete with map. You can borrow it.
From MP : was there any plan to keep the railway on after the end of the festival (like they tried with Liverpool)?
From JL : what where facilities like for stabling and maintainance
From GFM : Pepsi and British Gas taste the same
From MP : I think that tram was from the Gateshead system.
From DGWR : & it must been busy because Northern Rock 2 had just been sent to Japan
From MP : I think a couple of years back we were relaying at Walk Mill Summit, and the rails were ex-Gateshead that needed re-bending a bit.
From NB : That rail did wonders for my biceps…
From MP : I heard that Rock went to Bure Valley partially to try and tempt Bure Valley into buying several Rock-type locos?
From JL : thankyou to all.for a superb presentation. the garden festival concept was the Inspiration of the Haigh hall railway which is still with us just about
From SB : It must have left things tight sharing are locos with both gatesheadand BVR that summer.
From MH : Locos and stock would have been an issue in the longer term for sustaining these railways?
From JL : I would suspect that given the funding and manpower services, and the grants available at the time locos and stock would of been procured
From NB : I have a special affection for Black Prince - it’s what Nigel means!
From MP : just going back to gateshead, was there a tv-programme made about the festival? I remember seeing something on YouTube a couple of years back.
From SD : Is anything left? Can you trace the route or has it all disappeared under housing?
From ST : I have a few stills of Gateshead I think they are BW
From ST : Dave Holroyde not surprisingly was at Gateshead several times
From ST : I prob have some dup slides of his
From MP : ah, found the tv programme, an hour long film made by tyne-tees television.
From MH : No trace of Liverpool I'm told
From SD : I explored Liverpool a few years back - there is some new landscape area that follows some of the former railway route. I'll post some pictures if I can find them.
