Only a rhythmic gymnast can do this 🤸♀️✨

A back scale is a flexibility and balance element often performed in rhythmic gymnastics, ballet, and figure skating — but at an elite level, rhythmic gymnasts take it to another dimension.
In a back scale, the gymnast balances on one leg while the other leg is lifted high behind the body, ideally reaching a full 180° or even higher. The upper body leans forward, the back arches deeply, and the lifted leg extends straight toward the ceiling. The position demands tremendous back flexibility, hip openness, balance, and strength to hold perfect control without wobbling or collapsing the line.
At this extreme level — like in Miia’s photo — the back scale transitions into a back catch balance or needle scale, where the torso is nearly parallel to the floor and the leg is vertical or past vertical. That’s exceptionally hard, achievable only by advanced rhythmic gymnasts who’ve trained for years to develop both hyper-flexibility and fine muscle control. It’s not just flexibility — it’s about the precision to hit that line and hold it gracefully.
