Описание: Long before hair was a matter of fashion, it was a marker of identity in Japan. From the chonmage topknot, a style with a shaved crown, neatly bound hair signaling discipline and status, of the samurai to the Edo-period townspeople who expressed personality through subtle variations of cut and part, hairstyles reflected one’s place in society. With the Meiji Restoration came the introduction of scissors; when samurai cut their topknots, it marked not just a change in style, but a turning point in culture itself. Since then, barbershops have become a staple of Japanese life for both 10 minute cuts and elaborate styles.

At Record Ongaku Tokoya Seki (レコード音楽床屋 セキ), a rare “meikyoku rihatsuten” — a barbershop inspired by the tradition of meikyoku kissa, music curation takes center stage. Located in Nishi-Tokyo, the shop has been family-run since 1966, with current owner Shintaro Seki carrying on his father’s legacy alone. The interior remains largely unchanged: retro chairs, a compact space, and over 1,000 vinyl records lining the room — so many that two of the three original barber chairs now serve as record shelves. Each cut is paired with music selected to match the customer’s mood, played through the owners custom speakers, creating a space where time slows, hair is neatly reset, and visitors leave refreshed in both body and mind.

ファッションとしての意味を持つ以前から、日本において髪型はアイデンティティを示す重要な指標だった。頭頂部を剃り、髪をきちんと結い上げた丁髷（ちょんまげ）は、武士の規律や身分を象徴し、江戸時代の町人たちもまた、刈り方や分け目といった繊細な違いによって個性を表現していた。明治維新とともにハサミが持ち込まれ、武士が丁髷を切り落としたことは、単なる髪型の変化ではなく、日本文化の大きな転換点を意味していた。それ以来、床屋は10分カットから手の込んだスタイルまで、日本人の生活に欠かせない存在となってきた。

西東京市にあるレコード音楽床屋 セキは、「名曲喫茶」の系譜に着想を得た、希少な名曲理髪店である。1966年創業の家族経営の店で、現在は店主・堰信太郎氏が父の意思と店を一人で受け継いでいる。店内は創業当時の面影を色濃く残し、レトロな理容椅子、こじんまりとした空間、そして壁一面に並ぶ1,000枚以上のレコードが特徴だ。あまりの数の多さに、かつて三台あった理容椅子のうち二台は、今ではレコード棚として使われている。カットの時間には、お客さんの気分に合わせて選ばれた音楽が、店主自作のスピーカーから流れる。そこでは時がゆっくりと流れ、髪が整えられると同時に心もリセットされ、訪れる人は心身ともにリフレッシュして店を後にする。
