Many people believe horse slaughter ended in the United States. In reality, horses are still being sold, transported, and exported for meat after suffering neglect, injury, or abandonment. The system did not disappear. It moved.

Friends of Lackota Animal Sanctuary (FoLAS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal sanctuary located in Nunn, Colorado. Founded in 2021 by Thom and Sam Munholland, FoLAS provides a peaceful home for horses and other animals who would otherwise face dangerous and uncertain futures.

FoLAS is home to more than 125 rescued animals and is run entirely by volunteers. One hundred percent of donations go directly to food, medical care, shelter, and daily support for the animals.

FoLAS operates under the Four R’s of Compassion:
Rescue. Pulling horses from neglect, abuse, and the slaughter pipeline.
Rehabilitate. Providing medical care, nourishment, and safety.
Rehome. Placing horses with loving families when possible.
Retire. Offering lifelong sanctuary for those who need it.

Friends of Lackota Animal Sanctuary exists because these animals deserve better. Safety, dignity, and a future free from fear.

Project for Awesome is an annual charity livestream where the community votes to direct funding to nonprofits doing meaningful good in the world.
