Here’s the science of why that happens:
🧠 During the luteal phase, progesterone rises and turns into a neurosteroid called allopregnanolone (ALLO).
In most brains, ALLO calms anxiety through GABA receptors.
But in PMDD brains, it disrupts them — so the emotional centre (the amygdala) goes into chaos, and the prefrontal cortex, the part that controls rational thought, disconnects.
At the same time, serotonin transporters become overactive, pulling serotonin out of your brain’s circuits, leaving you in despair, unable to think your way out.
You’re not broken.
