PMDD and trauma are more connected than most people realise.
For many women, PMDD doesn’t feel like “mood swings.” It feels like a veil of darkness... a shift in perception, a loss of access to hope, meaning, and emotional safety.
In this video, I share my story of living with PMDD, experiencing suicidal ideation, becoming a hormone researcher, and discovering something that changed everything:
Hormones don’t create trauma.
They amplify threat perception in a nervous system that has already learned to expect danger.
When you understand that interaction (trauma × hormones × nervous system learning) self-blame begins to dissolve.
Later, through trauma-informed work grounded in memory reconsolidation, I experienced emotional triggers updating at the root. Not through willpower. Through biology.
I now study cyclical hormones and the nervous system because women deserve better science, better data, and better understanding.
If you’ve ever felt broken because of your cycle, I hope this helps you feel less alone.
You are not broken.
Your nervous system makes sense in context.
