For Episode 20 of Tales of the Lost and Haunted, our family hit the open road and headed to Illinois—a state known for some of the most haunted locations in America.
After arriving, we met up with friends who live just outside of Alton, Illinois, a town widely considered one of the most haunted places in the United States. From there, we traveled upriver to the quiet river town of Grafton to investigate the historic Ruebel Hotel.
Built in the late 1800s and rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1912, the Ruebel Hotel has a long history—and a reputation for unexplained activity. Guests and staff have reported footsteps in empty hallways, objects moving on their own, and sightings of a mysterious little girl said to play on the stairs.
What makes this investigation especially personal is that our friend Kay once worked at the Ruebel Hotel and experienced something they could never explain. During our visit, we explored the exact areas tied to that encounter—this time with our kids along for the adventure, using EMF readers and flashlights like a modern-day group of Goonies.
As the investigation unfolded, strange EMF activity appeared—but only in one specific location. The same room where the encounter happened years earlier.
