The famous chorale prelude "Zion hört die Wächter singen" from the fourth movement of the cantata BWV 140 has been transcribed by many, including Bach's own organ transcription of BWV 645. I am aware of the existing piano transcriptions by Kempff, Busoni, and Hess:
Kempff's transcription is the most virtuosic with a grand finale. (I would've mistaken it to be Busoni's.) While it is magnificent to listen to, I do not favor this approach.
Busoni, unlike most of his other Bach transcriptions, is quite faithful to the original work here. He wrote out the ornament executions and added many interpretative markings, some of which I do not agree with.
I do not have the score for Hess' transcription, but upon listening to a single recording I think it is similar to mine, with only minor differences in the choices in octave doubling.
As usual, my approach is straightforward. My doubling of the cantus firmus is inspired by Hess' transcription of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and Bagge's transcription of the opening chorus from the St. Matthew Passion. The doubled notes are printed in a smaller font and should be executed to produce a subtle enhancement effect, or they may be omitted altogether. I have also added the text from BWV 140 and typed out the repeat, which must not be omitted.
