We often associate "Polonaise" with Chopin, and rightfully so, but Bach (among others) had also composed such dance pieces. Here the mood is solemn and dignified. The melody is turned into the bass line in the Double. The thick orchestral texture is reduced to a flute solo of a brisk countermelody accompanied by basso continuo. In the "Polonaise ab initio" I have chosen to add bass octaves throughout and double the treble at the end in view of the flute. Performers who disagree with this interpretation can simply go back to the beginning ("ab initio") and play without the octaves.
This is my final video of the year. Thank you all for your continued support!
