The reconstruction of Interstate 440 reached a major milestone on March 1, 2020. The day marked one-year since long-term lane closures began on the Nashville project. For the last year, heavy construction has included removing the grassy median, rubblizing the concrete surface, and reconstructing the roadway throughout the 7.6 mile corridor, while also widening the bridge at the I-440/I-65 interchange.
In the last year, work crews have logged 260,000 man hours to crush 220,000 tons of concrete, place 236,000 tons of asphalt, and move 2.2 million pounds of steel.
The long-awaited project was made possible with funding from the IMPROVE Act and expedited through the Design-Build project delivery method. Work is expected to be completed in August 2020.
