JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. – In this video we ride along with the Medford Police Department (MPD) Livability Team and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputies to highlight our County’s Deflection program. Launched in late 2024, the program helps law enforcement guide eligible participants into treatment programs for substance use. Jackson County Deflection has enrolled 102 people as of July 24 with 47 people successfully completing and 15 currently in the program.
Deflection gives law enforcement an opportunity to send individuals with small amounts of narcotics to treatment providers instead of going to jail. In the program, eligible participants can choose to receive peer-based support from the Addiction Recovery Center (The ARC), and OnTrack Rogue Valley.
To successfully complete the program, participants must engage with treatment providers 10 times in 30 days, during this time five of the contacts must be treatment specific and the other five can be focused on additional support and social needs like housing, identification, and medical needs. The Deflection program is part of House Bill 4002, a bill recriminalizing the possession of hard drugs, and is funded by a state-wide grant.
