Third movement: A Julián Escuer



I knew Julian Escuer Fustero, grandfather of my life partner and husband Alejandro Escuer, for only a few years, yet his presence and strength marked in me the meaning and understanding of living in exile and forming a new life in another country. He arrived in Veracruz in the 1940s. Upon arriving in Mexico she moved to the city and in a guest house she met my husband's grandmother, who by the way was escaping the bombing of Rome during World War II. They married and from that relationship my mother-in-law Barbara Escuer was born. Julian's life reflects the complexity and hardship of many anonymous refugees who not only saved their lives through exile in other countries, but also had to reinvent themselves and create new families, a new way of being and doing in an unknown context. From our first conversation I understood their commitment and political integrity with the Republic, their struggle and their way of thinking, liberal and of great humanism. Last year I met his family in Spain, and the warmth and simplicity with which they received us marked in me an indelible bridge of admiration and affection.

Exilios, in its three movements, is dedicated and written in homage to those who for absurd reasons of the history of world politics and economics have to emigrate involuntarily. This work represents that which can only be said through music, a kind of sonorous portrait of what their struggle and their desire for integrity meant to me.


A Julián Escuer Fustero, abuelo de mi compañero de vida y esposo Alejandro Escuer, lo conocí pocos años, y sin embargo su presencia y fuerza marcaron en mi el significado y entendimiento de vivir en el exilio y formar una nueva vida en otro país. Llegó a Veracruz en los 1940´s. Al llegar a México se trasladó a la ciudad y en una casa de huéspedes conoció a la abuela de mi esposo, quien por cierto escapaba de los bombardeos de Roma de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Se casaron y de esa relación nació mi suegra Bárbara Escuer. La vida de Julián refleja la complejidad y dureza de muchos refugiados anónimos que no sólo salvaron sus vidas a través del exilio en otros países, sino también tuvieron que reinventarse y crear nuevas familias, una nueva forma de ser y hacer en un contexto desconocido. Desde nuestra primera plática entendí su compromiso e integridad política con la República, su lucha y su forma de pensar, liberal y de gran humanismo. El año pasado conocí a su familia en España, y la calidez y sencillez con la que nos recibieron marcaron en mí un puente imborrable de admiración y cariño.

Exilios, en sus tres movimientos, está dedicada y escrita en homenaje a los que por razones absurdas de la historia de la política y la economía del mundo tienen que emigran involuntariamente. Esta obra representa aquello que solo a través de la música puede ser dicho, una especie de retratos sonoros de lo que para mi significó su lucha y su deseo de integridad.
