Professor Paul Hoffman delivers an insightful and forward-looking overview of the evolving treatment paradigm in lung cancer, emphasizing how rapidly innovation is transforming both early-stage and advanced-stage care.
He highlights the emergence of a broad spectrum of new therapies including targeted therapies, immunotherapies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), bispecific antibodies, radioconjugates, and CAR-T cell therapies and notes that these are increasingly being used in combination to improve outcomes. These developments are reshaping treatment decision-making, posing both exciting opportunities and practical challenges for clinicians.
A central focus of his presentation is liquid biopsy, which he describes as a pivotal tool in modern lung cancer management. From enabling early detection, to monitoring tumor progression, to identifying resistance mechanisms, liquid biopsy is becoming an essential complement to traditional tissue biopsies especially in cases where the latter is not feasible. He also envisions a growing role for liquid biopsy in MRD (minimal residual disease) assessment and potentially lung cancer screening in high-risk populations, such as patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Professor Hoffman’s talk is both clinical and visionary, offering an up-to-date map of where precision oncology in lung cancer is heading and how non-invasive diagnostics like liquid biopsy are becoming foundational to this future.
