He quickly discovers the city is in a state of chaos, with no work available and the ruling class (King Bruno and his council) more interested in arguing over trivial matters and the economic benefits of having a monster terrorize the countryside than actually defeating it.
Through a series of slapstick misfortunes and bureaucratic misunderstandings, Dennis is repeatedly mistaken for a brave hero. Valiant knights are continuously slaughtered by the monster in gruesome, cartoonish ways, leaving Dennis as the only one left to inadvertently fill the role of the kingdom's savior. He remains largely oblivious to the grand quest, focused entirely on earning enough money to return home to Griselda.
Eventually, a grand tournament is held to find a champion, which Dennis accidentally wins. Armed with the fabled "vorpal blade," he is sent out to the monster's lair in the fens. In a final, chaotic confrontation, Dennis manages to slay the fantastically grotesque Jabberwock. He returns to the castle a hero and is reluctantly rewarded with half the kingdom and the hand of the beautiful Princess, the exact opposite of the simple life he craved. The film concludes with Dennis receiving a life he never wanted, a cynical twist on the traditional fairy tale ending.
