Time Bandits is a 1981 British fantasy adventure film, co-written and directed by Terry Gilliam, that follows a young boy's journey through time with a group of thieving dwarves.
Synopsis
Eleven-year-old Kevin is a history enthusiast whose parents are more interested in their new household gadgets than in him. One night, a knight on horseback suddenly bursts out of his bedroom wardrobe, followed by six bickering dwarves. These "Time Bandits" are former employees of the Supreme Being who have stolen his map of time and space, which charts all the wormholes in the universe. Their plan is to use the map to travel through history, steal treasure, and evade their former boss.
Kevin is accidentally swept along on their adventure. They fall through a time portal and land in various historical eras. First, they encounter Napoleon Bonaparte, who, due to his short stature, is obsessed with height and uses the dwarves to act out puppet shows. Next, they jump to Sherwood Forest, where they meet a very proper and not-too-bright Robin Hood and his gang of merry men. After that, they land in Ancient Greece and assist King Agamemnon in a battle against a Minotaur; Agamemnon is so taken with Kevin that he makes the boy his heir.
Throughout their journey, the group is pursued not only by the Supreme Being but also by the physical manifestation of Evil. Evil wants the map so he can rearrange history and destroy the world. The dwarves, motivated by greed, continue their quest for wealth, eventually being lured into the Fortress of Ultimate Darkness by a vision of the "Most Fabulous Object".
Once inside the fortress, Evil captures Kevin and the dwarves, confiscates the map, and prepares to use his powers to take over. Kevin and the dwarves escape their cage and manage to fight back using modern technology and historical reinforcements they gathered along their journey. Just as Evil is about to defeat them, the Supreme Being appears in the form of a smartly dressed old man and destroys Evil.
The Supreme Being reveals he allowed the map to be stolen as an experiment to test Evil's power. He orders the dwarves to gather the leftover, highly concentrated pieces of Evil, warning they are deadly. He then disappears with the dwarves, leaving Kevin behind. Kevin wakes up in his bedroom as firemen put out a fire caused by his parents' faulty microwave. He tries to warn them not to touch a smoldering piece of concentrated Evil they find in the burnt microwave, but they ignore him and touch the fragment, instantly exploding. A fireman, who resembles King Agamemnon, winks at Kevin as the boy is left alone in the yard, wondering where his parents have gone.
