Jamie Macpherson (1675-1700) was the illegitimate son of a Scottish Highland laird and a gypsy woman, He was gifted Scottish fiddler and also a Robin Hood-style outlaw. He was captured at Banff, tried, and convicted of robbery. Infamously, Lord Duff of Braco thwarted a royal reprieve he knew was being delivered by a rider on horseback by having the town clock's hands turned ahead by 15 minutes. By this chicanery Braco was able to execute Macpherson before the decreed hour. Standing on the gallows, Macpherson played this air, broke his fiddle over his knee, and was thereupon hanged. This arrangement is of J. Scott Skinner's version of the tune.
Garrett Barry (1847-1899) was a famous blind uilleann piper from County Clare.
These pieces are from the solo guitar CD “Brian Borus March” are arranged and performed by Glenn Weiser on a 1926 Martin 0-21 and are published in his Celtic fingerstyle guitar books.
