The serene air “Planxty George Brabazon” is attributed to the Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). In Scotland it was renamed "Prince Charlie's Welcome to the Isle of Skye," to commemorate Charles Edward Stuart's flight from the Scottish mainland in 1746 after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden.
As for “Carolan’s Receipt,” Carolan was once feeling unwell. A doctor advised him to quit drinking, but he soon felt worse. Seeking a second opinion, the bard visited his friend Dr. John Stafford. The doctor told Carolan that if he would just play his harp for him, he would give Carolan a receipt-an archaic term for a prescription-for whiskey. The two drank heartily, and Carolan composed this ebullient tune.
These guitar arrangements are from Glenn Weiser’s book, “Celtic Harp Music of Carolan and Others for Solo Guitar.” Performed by Glenn Weiser on a 1926 0-21 Martin guitar.
