The largest area of land above 10,000 feet in the 48 states hosts "The Most Beautiful Roadway in America" - famously named so by Charles Kuralt - as well as every person I've spoken with while traveling this amazing road over the years. It traces a series of steep zigzags and switchbacks, along the Montana–Wyoming border to the 10,947-foot-high (3,337 m) summit, with breathtaking views of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains, and climbing to almost 11,000 feet above sea level. There are over 10,000 mountain lakes, 20 peaks reaching over 12,000 feet in elevation, and 12 national forest campgrounds. This is almost entirely public land as we travel from Red Lodge, Montana to Cooke City, Montana - gatekeeper to Yellowstone's Northeast Entrance. This was also Ernest Hemingway's playground and personal Shangri-La. It is possible to see Grizzly Bears, Moose, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goats, Mule Deer, and Marmots along the way. Drivers should plan on a driving time of at least two hours (WITHOUT STOPS) for the 69-mile (111 km) trip from Red Lodge to Cooke City. I always get a Sioux City Sarsaparilla at the Cooke City General Store - that's been in service since the 1800's - and I always get a cheeseburger at the Miners Saloon. Cooke City has branded itself as the "Coolest Small Town in America" and I won't argue with that declaration. Any questions about the drive? Feel free to ask! I have done the round trip about 15 times and I do it every Fall.
