When the lower traps are weak or not strong as they should be the scapula will shift outward instead of outward and upward - Thus causing the humerus that is underneath the scapula to not have enough space for movement which causes the humerus to collide with the scapula. And what does this cause? Impingement of the soft tissues - Why do you care? Because this is likely the cause of your shoulder pain.
How can you fix that? By strengthening your lower trapezius with properly executed (Biomechanical Optimization) rows, deadlifts, isolated scapula depression, and standing shoulder external rotations.
