A New York Times article recently questioned how Mamdani, a candidate for New York City mayor who just won the Democratic Party primary race, answered the race question on college application forms. In this view I overview the news story and apply sociological concepts and critical thinking to deconstruct the argument and investigate the history of the social construction of race. Additionally understanding the way race is used as an attack on political candidates by questioning their citizenship, religion, or racial background. As a sociology professor who teaches Sociology of Race & Ethnicity, this news story was a perfect opportunity to illustrate how sociological insights can shed lights on current events. Most specifically, we can understand that Mamdani is multicultural, in a dominant society reliant on monocultural and monoracial constructs.
