Horses can be trained with Positive Reinforcement (food) just like any other species on the planet. They are not some rare, unusual and masochistic creature that prefers feeling discomfort over feeling pleasure.
Horses are also brilliant at being able to hear and react to verbal cues and markers that have been paired with food - how else can we clicker train them, the click is literally an audible cue!!
They can stop in an instant on a particular sound and I'm sure they'd prefer an audible cue trained with Positive Reinforcement and paired with food, over pain in the mouth and I'm sure you'll get a better and quicker response.
They can also move forward on an audible or tactile cue trained with Positive Reinforcement and paired with food, which I'm sure they'd prefer over someone squeezing their ribs so hard that they are driven to escape from it.
