He shares how he realized his interest lay in management and not just research and so chose to pursue an MBA. Kshitij takes us through his story, sharing highlights from his time at XLRI Jamshedpur to working in consulting, to finally becoming an entrepreneur
Kshitij shares his CAT and MBA entrance details and tells us how he couldn’t score well in Quant, despite having a good overall CAT score. This ensured that he didn’t get shortlisted for the major b-schools.
But luckily, he also wrote XAT and did well in the exam. As he tells it, he needed a good score, but his background in life sciences meant that he had a chance at cracking XLRI due to the diversity angle. Once in XLRI, Kshitij shares how he joined a bunch of informal committees and clubs that allowed him a taste of management, and entrepreneurship and helped him expand his perception.
Having interned at Cognizant and having cracked a role at Deloitte as a consultant, Kshitij would probably have continued on the typical path. But here’s when he made a different decision. When offered the chance to work in the USA by Deloitte, Kshitij decided he was better off in India and so resigned. He next chose to work with a social start-up looking towards growing Pongamia Pinnata trees in non-arable land in various districts of Bihar to extract biofuel.
This seemingly crazy decision led to Kshitij working and staying in Bihar, dealing with local authorities, staying in rural areas, sometimes without electricity, and much more. He also shares how their start-up Green Leaf Energy collaborated with Government schemes and programs to encourage skill development and employment in rural areas.
Incidentally, this is when they found that there is arable or fertile land that can be used to grow fruit trees. All this led to Kshitij and the team opening a juice bar called Fruit Press. Next Kshitij also co-founded a salad cloud kitchen called Salad Bar. But eventually, he decided to return to the corporate world. In his unassuming way, Kshitij tells us some simple, and yet profound moments from his experiences in this chat.
