You may have heard the term ACE, or adverse childhood experience, used in conversations about childhood trauma and long-term health outcomes. In this video, we explain what ACEs are, where the concept comes from, and why they continue to matter today.
According to the CDC, a significant percentage of adults have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience. The original ACE study, developed in the 1990s by Dr. Felitti and Dr. Anda while working with Kaiser Permanente, helped establish a link between childhood trauma and negative health outcomes later in life.
We also discuss how the understanding of ACEs has evolved over time, including how instability caused by parental separation is now recognized as a contributing factor. Importantly, this conversation explores how cycles of trauma can repeat across generations and how increased awareness, regulation, and intentional decision-making can help prevent children from experiencing the same instability their parents may have faced.
The goal of this discussion is education, awareness, and helping families understand how to reduce harm, protect children, and stop generational cycles of trauma whenever possible.
