Come with me on a 3 days holiday in the italian region of Umbria!
In central Italy, Tuscany gets most of the attention, but often-overlooked Umbria, despite being hailed as “the next Tuscany” for years, is still much less visited than its neighbor.
Umbria is Italy’s 5th-smallest region, a region of rolling green hills and historic villages.
Because of its mountainous terrain it’s extremely helpful to have a car at your disposal, driving in the Umbria beautiful countryside is an experience on its own!
Our firt stop is Perugia, the capital of Umbria.
Perugia is approximately equidistant from both Florence and Rome and sits on a hilltop region surrounded by valleys and mountains, it's the biggest city in the region, known for its old town, gothic main square and rich local delicacies.
The next stop is Assisi: this amazing town is on the list of World Heritage Sites, famous for being the birthplace of St. Francis (one of Italy’s most famous patron saints), it's a popular destination for pilgrims.
You don’t have to be religious to appreciate the town’s beautiful scenery, spectacular architecture and rich culture, Assisi's atmospheric medieval streets and the outstanding castle atop this Umbrian hill town should not be overlooked.
Assisi is also a foodie’s paradise with mouth-watering meat, cheese and fine wine.
A less known town, but not less facinating, is Spello.
Nestled on the southern flank of Mount Subasio, between Assisi and Foligno, Spello is one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of Italy".
A not to miss event is the "Infiorata", a Flower Festival held between May and August. During this time of the year the village becomes more beautiful thanks to this competition: all citizens can participate and adorn their doorways and houses facades with plants and flowers. You will surely notice, other than the flowers, many houses proudly displaying the winning plaques.
The small village of Rasiglia, which stands on a hill over 600 meters above sea level, located not far from Foligno, is a unique place that fascinates and amazes those who visit it.
One of the characteristics of Rasiglia is its water, the hamlet is crossed by narrow streets alternating with wooden bridges, streams and waterfalls creating a unique spectacle that seems to immerse visitors in a fairy tale.
Gubbio is an ancient city situated near the base of Mount Ingino, well known by italians, this town is less frequented by international tourists.
Amongst green fields Gubbio rises up on a hillside, layers of terraces upon each other, and consists of a series of parallel streets, running at different levels, each steep and precipitous, and by monumental buildings and dark stone houses in the typical medieval style.
Our last stop is San Leo, in the region of Emilia-Romagna.
This small village is located in the heart of the Montefeltro countryside on an enormous rocky outcropping, which cannot be scaled from any side.
San Leo has a great view of the surrounding mountains, all the way down to the sea.
The highlight of this place is the stunningly located Fort, sited on a large rock above the village.
The fortress housed many people of great importance including Dante and Saint Francis of Assisi.
Taken by the Papal States in 1631, it became a horrible prison where, among others, the Count of Cagliostro (1795) and Felice Orsini (1844) lived out their last days.
