Should Alex Murdaugh get a new trial in the infamous killings of his wife and son? The South Carolina Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Wednesday, February 11, to decide exactly that.
Murdaugh is appealing his 2023 conviction on murder charges for the June 2021 deaths of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Murdaugh is currently serving two life sentences for the killings, but he continues to maintain his innocence.
His legal team is focusing on two key arguments. They say former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during the trial, and they argue trial Judge Clifton Newman allowed too much testimony about Murdaugh’s financial crimes as motive, evidence the defense says unfairly prejudiced the jury.
