The C-12 license is for earthwork and paving contractors in the state of California. There are over 73 different license classifications offered by the CSLB.
The CSLB stands for the Contractors State License Board, which is the governing body for construction professionals. Contractor license requirements are set by the CSLB.
To get any contractor license you must have at least 4 years journeyman level experience and pass a two-part exam.
In addition to experience, you have to have someone sign off and verify the experience you are claiming to have.
The person who signs off for you can be a general contractor, C12 contractors license holder, journeyman or fellow employee, foreman or supervisor or even a client.
This person will need to provide a brief but detailed description of your experience so it is important that you watch the video to understand the guidelines of how this experience must be described.
Typically, it takes about 90 days for the CSLB to process your application, assign you a test date and pass the exam for the earthwork contractor license.
In many cases, it can take a lot shorter than that but on average it can be a pretty slow process. To learn more about the costs of a California contractor license check out this video: • California Contractor License Cost - (2022...
You will want to make sure that you are preparing for your C12 license.
Earthwork and paving is a broad term that can refer to a variety of different trades and areas of expertise.
Paving contractors, asphalt contractors, earthmoving contractors, excavation contractors, and geologists are all terms that can potentially fall under the C-12 license.
Be sure to make sure that you are prepared for the contractor law portion of the exam as well. If this is the first exam you have taken in awhile it could be beneficial to enroll in a contractor license school. But remember, these classes are not designed to teach you trade. Focus only on the law concepts. Contractor classes are for journeyman level earthmoving tradesmen.
You will need to know about accounting, business practices, mechanics liens, construction bonds, stop notices, blueprint reading and much more.
If you have a criminal history, this does not disqualify you from getting a contractor license but you need to be 100% honest when filling out the application.
The CSLB is mainly looking for charges associated with fraud, embezzlement, and forgery. If your charge does not fall under one of these categories, you should be ok.
However, make sure that you send any documentation that the CSLB requests.
Getting the C-12 License can be a huge step up for excavation contractors looking to expand their business or start an earthmoving company.
In California, you cannot advertise or charge over $500 without a California state contractor’s license. These laws are in place to protect the public.
To protect and maintain the integrity of the construction industry, licensing is in place to ensure that anyone charging over $500 for construction services knows what they are doing and have protection mechanisms such as construction bonds in place to protect their clients against default.
