The C-6 license for cabinet making, millwork, and finish carpentry contractors is one of 73 contractor license classifications offered in California.

Contractor licensing is governed by the Contractors state license Board.

A C-6 license can help you scale your services effectively and take your business to the next level.

In California, you have to have a contractor license to advertise and charge over $500. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to get a license.

Thousands of tradesmen apply each year for their contractor licenses in California. One thing is always the same.

Applicants often underestimate the amount of preparation that goes into getting this taken care of.

As stated in the video, it is very important that you have your experience, criminal background information, check stubs, tax returns, and personal information all in order before applying to the CSLB.

To get the C-6 license you must meet the following requirements:

18 Years of age
Driver’s license or USA ID
Social Security or ITIN #
Not currently on probation or parole

In addition to these basic requirements, applicants have to have 4 years journeyman level experience, a qualifying individual to sign off and pass a two-part exam.

The finish carpentry license is for skilled tradesmen that already have experience in the construction industry.

You should be able to meet the minimum experience requirements of a carpenter before applying!

The contractor license exam has two parts: 115 Questions of LAW and 115 Questions of TRADE.

The law test is the same for all 73 license classifications. Each trade test is different. The C-6 license test is going to be specific to your trade.

Many applicants rely 100% on their experience to pass the exam.

Unfortunately, many are humbled on test day. The CSLB has different standards than those of the day to day on the job site.

If you do not have any experience as in finish carpentry, then what you will want to look into is a carpentry apprenticeship.

The difference between an apprenticeship program and a contractor license school is that a contractor license school is exam prep focused.

Apprenticeship programs are designed to teach you your trade.

Be wary of contractor license schools claiming to be able to teach you your trade. Contractor classes should be law and business focused.

Remember that the CSLB won’t even let you take the exam unless you can prove 4 year’s experience.

Any study materials that have trade specific content, are usually exam prep focused.
