The ITALIAN CROSS STITCH is also known as the ARROWHEAD CROSS, ITALIAN CROSS, or ITALIAN STITCH.
The stitch appears to originate between the 13th and the 16th centuries and was used, with the long-armed cross stitch, as the background filling stitch on the earliest Assisi embroideries (source: Piecework magazine online, accessed January 2023).
