Описание: In George Petrou’s bold reimagining of Balzac’s Sarrasine, the male soprano Samuel Mariño brings to life the mysterious castrato Zambinella, performing Handel’s “No, no, ch’io non apprezzo figlio” with radiant virtuosity along with the spanish tenor Juan Sancho as Sarrasine.

Balzac’s novella merges love, obsession, and gender ambiguity: the sculptor Sarrasine falls hopelessly in love with the opera star Zambinella, unaware she is in fact a castrated man. Petrou and director Laurence Dale revive this tale as a Handel pasticcio, selecting arias the composer himself once discarded — not for lack of quality, but for dramatic economy.

This aria, drawn from Alessandro (HWV 21), gains new meaning in the Sarrasine narrative, blurring the lines between historical opera and modern theatre.

✨ Samuel Mariño – a character out of time
With Samuel Mariño, illusion becomes reality. Defining himself as a soprano, the artist truly created a sensation: adorned in feminine attire inspired by the Louis XV era, he radiates on stage through the refinement of his bearing, the delicacy of his physique, the precision of his makeup, and the poised control of every gesture.

His voice, of captivating sweetness, unfolds with elegance: perfectly even trills, remarkable endurance, and dazzling vocalises and gorgheggi. The few harsher high notes once heard have now softened, giving way to a consistently fluid line. In this way, Mariño unites vocal virtuosity with theatrical presence, embodying a figure of seduction that will long remain linked to his name.

He embraces with ease his feminine side and openly claims his non-binary identity, which adds further depth to his artistry. Yet it would be unfair to reduce his performance to this alone: his spoken delivery and dramatic instinct confirm him as a consummate actor, fully on par with his singing.
