Balzac’s novella merges love, obsession, and gender ambiguity: the sculptor Sarrasine falls hopelessly in love with the opera star Zambinella, unaware she is in fact a castrated man. Petrou and director Laurence Dale revive this tale as a Handel pasticcio, selecting arias the composer himself once discarded — not for lack of quality, but for dramatic economy.

This aria, drawn from Alessandro (HWV 21), gains new meaning in the Sarrasine narrative, blurring the lines between historical opera and modern theatre.
