The hydrolysis of an alkene, also known as the hydration of an alkene, is the addition of a water molecule (H_{2}O) across the alkene's double bond to form an alcohol.
This is an electrophilic addition reaction that can be accomplished through several methods, the most common being acid- catalyzed hydration, oxymercuration-demercuration, and hydroboration- oxidation. In acid -catalyzed hydration, the reaction follows Markovnikov' s rule, meaning the hydroxyl (OH)group adds to the more substituted carbon of the double bond.
Hydrolysis of an alkene to form a glycol (1,2-diol) typically involves a two-step process: first, converting the alkene to an epoxide (cyclic ether) via oxidation (e.g., with peroxyacids or by forming a halohydrin then treating with base), and then performing an acid-catalyzed ring-opening (hydrolysis) of the epoxide with water to yield the vicinal diol (glycol). This overall process adds two hydroxyl (-OH) groups across the double bond, known as dihydroxylation.
