Calvin Hampton was among the most important American organ composers of the twentieth century. Born in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, in 1938, he studied at Oberlin Conservatory and Syracuse University before serving as organist and choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church in New York City from 1963 until 1983. In 1980, Hampton was commissioned by Wayne Leupold to compose a suite of three pieces for organ, each in the style of one of the three great twentieth-century French organ composers: Marcel Dupré, Olivier Messiaen, and Jehan Alain. The suite's second movement, "In Paradisum," is modeled after Messiaen's distinctive harmonic language and, in keeping with his deep religiosity, reflects on the text of the Catholic Requiem Mass referring to paradise.
Performed live on March 30, 2024 on the Ruffatti organ in the Ruth H. Barrus Concert Hall at BYU-Idaho. For concert dates and further information about Organ Studies go to https://www.byui.edu/music/events
