The Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 549, dates from Bach's early Arnstadt period around 1705-1706, when the twenty-year-old composer was serving as organist at the Neue Kirche. This compact work showcases the virtuoso pedal technique that would become a hallmark of Bach's organ style, opening with a dramatic pedal solo that introduces a questioning motif later elaborated in the manuals
