What is the best way to deal with difficult emotions? Should we follow the Tantric path and embrace the negative feelings, or the Vedantic path, where we separate ourself from the unpleasant emotion and see clearly that we are not the emotion but that which is aware of it?
Rupert says: ‘I would recommend experimenting with both approaches – they lead to the same resolution. But for persistent, all-pervasive emotions, I recommend the Tantric approach. If you go deeply into the emotion in that way, it will lose its unpleasant quality.
‘Totally embrace the emotion and see that the only substance present in it is awareness itself – there’s nothing inherently hurtful there. It’s your resistance to it that perpetuates it. You don’t resist it because it’s unpleasant, it’s unpleasant because you resist it.’
