This 8K macro showcases a spectacular gold-in-quartz specimen from the famous 16 to 1 Mine in the Alleghany District of Sierra County, California. Shot on a Panasonic S1R II, the video lingers over braided networks of dark arsenopyrite and brilliant streaks of native gold blazing out of snowy white quartz. Pause and study every fracture-filled veinlet and pocket of coarse gold in ultra-high resolution.
The Sixteen-to-One Mine is the most productive mine in the Alleghany District and one of the most famous high-grade gold mines in California, credited with over one million ounces of gold production from exceptionally rich “pockety” ore shoots. Discovered in 1896 and worked through multiple booms, it became legendary for spectacular specimen pockets, including the 1993 “million dollar day” when miners pulled about 2,600 ounces of gold from a single pocket. Today the mine still operates on a small scale, with much of its reputation built on museum-grade gold-quartz pieces.
Geologically, the 16 to 1 is a classic example of a mesothermal/orogenic gold system hosted in the Melones Fault Zone of the northern Sierra Nevada. Gold occurs in fissure-filling hydrothermal quartz veins that cut amphibolite, schist, metaconglomerate, and serpentinite, with ore localized along an easterly dipping reverse fault within the Alleghany fracture system. Native gold forms extremely rich but erratic shoots introduced into earlier barren quartz during later stages of mineralization, commonly accompanied by arsenopyrite and other sulfides—exactly the association you see highlighted in this specimen.
This particular piece is a hefty hand specimen measuring about 8.4 × 7.3 × 4.0 cm and weighing roughly 465 grams. Against a clean white quartz background, dark arsenopyrite stringers crisscross the piece, with vivid patches and leaves of gold lighting up along the main fracture zones—a textbook “pocket piece” from one of California’s premier specimen gold localities. Under 8K macro, the contrast between milky quartz, smoky arsenopyrite, and blazing gold makes every frame visually addictive.
