This 8K macro showcases a thick vein specimen of gold- and telluride-rich quartz from a remote, high-grade gold camp in the North Cascades of Washington State. Shot in ultra-high 8K resolution on a Panasonic S1RII, the slow, steady clip lets you study flashes of visible gold, silvery Bi–Au tellurides, and dark sulfides frozen in milky quartz with incredible clarity and texture.
The specimen comes from a classic telluride-bearing locality in the Mount Baker mining district, perched high above timberline in rugged terrain that has challenged miners for more than a century. Access has always been difficult—steep trails, deep snow, and short field seasons—but pockets of bonanza-grade ore have kept this mountaintop camp alive in the imaginations of miners, geologists, and collectors who follow its modern underground work.
Structurally, this ore comes from a steep, fault-hosted quartz vein system carrying gold, bismuth–gold tellurides, and sulfides such as pyrite and related species. Near the top center of the piece you can see beautifully preserved slickensides: polished, striated surfaces formed as the vein slipped along a fault plane. That movement created a high-permeability conduit that focused gold- and telluride-rich hydrothermal fluids, and tiny inclusions of visible gold are scattered along the striated surface where those fluids last bled through. These textures—veinlets, healed breccias, and slickensided quartz—are classic features of high-grade gold–telluride veins in subduction-related arc terranes like the North Cascades.
This particular piece is a substantial hand specimen, about 14.1 × 8.4 × 4.5 cm and 804 grams, taken from a vein segment mined in 2025 during recent underground work. It is packed with ore minerals yet still shows enough quartz and structure to tell the story of the vein, making it an ideal reference piece for collectors, ore geeks, and geology students who want to see what modern high-grade telluride gold from the North Cascades really looks like up close.
