Shiva Shanta Night Sadhana - Track 2 — प्राण-शमनम् (Prana-Shamanam) | Breath Awareness Meditation
Enter the profound practice of Prana-Shamanam - the pacification and calming of life force through effortless breath awareness. This is Track 2 of the Shiva Shanta Night Sadhana series, designed specifically for deep nocturnal meditation practice rooted in ancient Shiva Yoga pranayama tradition.
🕉️ Practice: प्राण-शमनम् (Prana-Shamanam) - Witness Consciousness Breath Meditation
This track guides you into Sakshi Bhava - the state of witness consciousness - where you observe your natural breath without controlling, manipulating, or forcing it. You simply witness: inhalation comes, exhalation goes, and in this witnessing, you discover Shiva as the unitary Prana behind all breath movements.
Core Teaching:
"श्वासे शिवः, प्रश्वासे शिवः"
"In inhalation is Shiva, in exhalation is Shiva"
The practice reveals that Shiva is not in controlling the breath, but in the pure awareness that witnesses breath arising and dissolving on its own. This is the fourth state of consciousness (Turiya) - restful alertness beyond waking, dreaming, and sleeping.
🙏 How to Practice:
Preparation: Sit in a comfortable meditation posture (Padmasana, Sukhasana, or any cross-legged position) with spine naturally erect but relaxed. You may also practice lying down if preferred for night sadhana.
Eyes: Gently close eyes or keep them half-open in a soft gaze downward (witness state).
Breath: Do nothing to the breath. Allow it to be completely natural - shallow or deep, fast or slow, regular or irregular. Your only task is to observe.
Awareness: Notice the sensation of breath entering the nostrils, the gentle expansion of chest or belly, the pause, and the natural release of exhalation. You are not breathing - you are watching breath happen.
Witness: When you notice you are thinking, simply observe "thinking is happening." When you notice breath, observe "breathing is happening." You are the unchanging Sakshi (witness) behind all these movements.
No Control: The moment you try to control, deepen, or regulate the breath, you have left witness consciousness. Simply return to observing what IS, exactly as it is.
Dissolution: As practice deepens, the sense of "I am breathing" dissolves into "breath is happening" and finally "witnessing is happening" - pure consciousness remains.
Benefits of Prana-Shamanam Practice:
Calms and pacifies the nervous system naturally
Reduces mental agitation and anxiety without force
Develops Sakshi Bhava - witness consciousness detachment
Balances Prana (life force) and activates Sushumna (central energy channel)
Prepares for deeper meditation and Samadhi states
Releases need for control and surrenders to natural flow
Awakens to the eternal Shiva consciousness within
Cultivates restful alertness - relaxed yet fully present
Ideal for insomnia and restful sleep preparation
Musical Structure:
This track features extremely slow, whispered male vocals in Sanskrit, distant ethereal choir, deep sustaining Om drone, long intentional silences for actual practice, and minimal instrumentation to create a cave-like nocturnal meditation atmosphere. The progression moves from gentle instruction to complete dissolution into silence and witness consciousness.
Best Time to Practice:
Late night (10 PM - 2 AM) during Shiva's sacred hours
Before sleep as preparation for conscious rest
Early morning (4-6 AM) Brahma Muhurta for deep meditation
Anytime you feel mental agitation or stress
Part of Maha Shivaratri all-night vigil (jaagaran)
